Day School day! Read a book about going to school. Try asking your teacher what her favorite one is. Shine a light on diversity and encourage your child to read about a new community. Read a graphic novel and draw your own cartoon. Day Read a story based on a real person. Think of a time when you made a mistake that worried you or caused you to feel guilty.

How do their similarities and differences affect their stories? Why or why not? Which character seems to have more willpower? How can you tell? What do you learn about the characters in each story, and how does what you learn influence how you see the characters overall? Which story is your favorite and why? When and how will you have to plant them?

How will you have to care for them? When is the best time to harvest or pick them?

Choose a few of these illustrations and describe with words the rooms in the homes, as well as some of the things you see there. Also, explain what these homes might tell you about the characters, and perhaps even the story. Write them on cards with definitions in your own words, and illustrate them, too. Then make a challenge word board where you can hang all your cards. Your Favorite Story Comic: Which story in this collection is your favorite?

Using examples from the words and the illustrations, write and draw comics about the story you like best. Also describe why you like it. Josefina causes trouble on the trail—then she proves her worth to the family and Faith. Consider the entire story. What things might the quilt help Faith remember, and why might these be important to remember? Is there more than one? If so, discuss each. Explain your answers using several details from the book.

How does each affect the other? How does each respond to challenges in the story? How do their responses affect the story overall? What do you learn from it? Once you sew or draw these patterns, write or dictate how each tells the story of your family.
